Policies and Procedures


 South Cambridgeshire Equestrian Centre (SCEC) has a duty of care to safeguard all children involved in CSEC from harm. All children have a right to protection, and the needs of disabled children and others who may be potentially vulnerable must be taken into account. SCEC will ensure the safety and protection of all children involved in SCEC through adherence to the Child Protection Guidelines adopted by SCEC.


 A child is defined as a person under the age of 18 (The Children Act 1989)


We will: 

  • Always work in an open environment (e.g. avoiding provate or unobserved situations and encorouging open communication with no secrets

  • Treat all young people/disabled adults equally and with respect and dignity

  • Always put the welfare of each young person first before winning or acheiving goals

  • Maintain a safe and appropriate distance with riders ( e.g. it is not appropriate for staff or volunteers to have an intimate relationship with a child to share a room with them)

  • Build balanced relationships based on mutual trust which empowers children to share in the decision making process

  • Make riding fun, enjoyable and promote fair play

  • Ensure that if any form of manual / physical support is required it is provided openly.

  • Involve parents / carers wherver possible

  • Be excellent role models - this includes not smoking or drinking alcohol in the company of children

  • Give enthusiastic and constructive feddback rather than negative criticism

  • Recognise the developmental needs and capacity of young people and disabled adults- avoiding excessive training or cometition and not pushing them against their will

  • Secure parental consent in writing to act in loco parentis, if the need arised to administer first aid and/or medical treatment 

  • Keep a written record of any injury that occurs along with the details of any treatment given


  • Escorts will be over 16 years of age

  • There will be no more than 6 riders per escort

  • Riders will be allocated suitable horses

  • Escorts and riders will wear high visibility clothing

  • Escorts will carry lead reins and be capable of riding and leading

  • Escorts will give sufficient warning of a change of pace or terrain

  • Escorts will carry a 1st Aid pack, telephone and know numbers for yard, vet and emergency services
